Thank_You_Text

December 26th is National Thank You Note Day.

Saying “thank you” is one of the most important things you can do. It acknowledges appreciation for a kindness, whether it is a gift or an action. Sending a handwritten note of thanks reciprocates the thoughtfulness.

The message doesn’t have to be long.

Here are the steps:

1-Salutation and name
Make sure you have the correct spelling of the person’s name. This may sound obvious but you don’t want to spell “Bryan” as “Brian.”

2-Say “thank you” and specifically identify the gift.

3-Express your gratitude and how the gift will be used.

4-Say something about its attractiveness.
So what do you do if you don’t love the gift? Take a moment and think! There is always something positive that can be appreciated. Remember, it truly is the thought that counts.

5-Include in the message any future plans that you may have with the giver.

6-Closing

7-Sign your name

Sample thank you note for a personal gift:

Dear Susan,

Thank you for the pretty cashmere hat and scarf set. Your thoughtfulness is truly appreciated. It will keep me warm on those cold winter days. Pink is my favorite color and I can’t wait to wear it with my cobalt blue coat.

I look forward to seeing you next week at Zumba class.

Wishing you all the best in the New Year.

With love,

Sample thank you note for a business gift:

Dear Bob,

Thank you for the bottle of Australian chardonnay. As an enthusiastic wine connoisseur, you could not have selected a more perfect gift. I will think of you as I enjoy a glass with dinner.

I look forward to working with you on next season’s marketing campaign.

Cheers!

The paper quality doesn’t have to be luxurious. In fact, you can pick up a box at your local CVS. However, if you do decide to splurge, Papyrus and Demsy and Caroll are two of my favorite stationers. You can choose a box set that reflects your personality, is monogramed or simply says “Thank You.”

Finally, mail it immediately. You don’t want to get distracted with other holiday obligations and forget to thank the person for his or her generosity. It should be in the mailbox prior to January 1st.

If someone gives you a gift or does something nice for you the only acceptable reply is a handwritten “thank you” note. An email or text is simply not Always Appropriate.

Merry Christmas!
